IPL Photofacial and Other Non-Invasive Treatments for Sacramento Residents

Aging, sun damage, medications, or skin conditions such as rosacea may produce brown spots, spider veins, and areas of redness that mar the skin's natural beauty. At the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery, Craig E. Berris, M.D. and his highly trained staff offer a selection of non-invasive enhancements. Treatments include fractional skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, facials, and the IPL Photofacial. Sacramento area residents seeking a non-invasive way to rejuvenate their skin may be interested in these options.

IPL Photofacial

The use of IPL Photofacial technology, (which includes lasers and pulsed light to remove skin imperfections), has become increasingly common over the last several years. These treatments can improve skin’s texture and tone, as well as remove pigmented and vascular lesions.

Good Candidates for IPL Photofacial

Treatment works best for people with fair to medium skin color. This is because darker skin absorbs some of the energy emitted during treatment, which means less energy reaches the pigmented or vascular lesions targeted for treatment.

Photofacial Treatment Sessions

Prior to an IPL Photofacial procedure at our Sacramento office, a nurse may pre-treat the area with a topical anesthetic if needed. After the initial preparation, the nurse will move a device that delivers pulses of light over the skin. These pulses of light break up pigment in the brown spots and close off small vessels. Most people perceive the light pulses as a gentle snapping sensation, which causes little or no discomfort. Although some patients see good results after just one treatment, it may take two or three treatments to achieve optimal results.

After IPL Photofacial Treatment

Most people experience some mild, temporary redness and puffiness in the treated area for a short period of time. This side effect may be similar to a sunburn, does not interfere with normal activities, and usually subsides after a day.

Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Traditional laser skin resurfacing is a very effective means of eliminating or reducing lines and wrinkles on the face. However, because the traditional method usually entails a long healing period with significant redness of the skin, fractional treatment has become increasingly popular. With this method, areas of untreated tissue alternate with areas treated tissue. This allows for faster healing and less redness.

One may experience some redness, warmth, or swelling in the treatment area which typically resolves within a day or two. Some light pinkness may persist slightly longer. This short, relatively easy recovery period allows the patient to get back to work and other activities quickly. Because only a fraction of the skin is treated at any one time, usually a series of treatments (at three- to six-week intervals) may be required to achieve desired results.

Microdermabrasion

For those looking to soften fine lines, reduce age spots, treat acne or other scars, or improve skin quality, our Sacramento center offers microdermabrasion in addition to IPL Photofacial, fractional skin resurfacing, and chemical peels. Microdermabrasion is a painless procedure that uses tiny crystals to remove the superficial layer of skin, allowing new, healthier skin to take its place.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use a chemical solution to improve the texture of the face by removing the damaged outer layer of skin. It is helpful for those with facial blemishes, wrinkles, or uneven pigmentation. Similar in nature to chemical peels, a glycolic peel uses alpha hydroxy acid for a lighter peel. These popular treatments are sometimes known as "lunch time peels," since there is no recovery period or redness, and one may return to work immediately.

Refinity® Peels

Our center is pleased to offer the Refinity® peel. Composed of 70 percent glycolic acid with Cosmoderm-7 as an anti-irritant, this new, high-performance peeling agent eliminates the stinging and irritation associated with previous types of alpha hydroxy acid peels.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)

TCA peels are stronger than glycolic acid peels and are most commonly used for medium-depth peeling. With a TCA peel, the superficial layer of skin peels away and is replaced by new skin that is healthier and tighter.

Obagi Blue Peel® System

The Obagi Blue Peel® System is a particularly safe, superior chemical peel characterized by a seven- to 10-day healing period. The special blue base functions as a built-in safety mechanism to control the depth of the peel. The peel can be performed on the neck, chest, arms, and legs and may be used for all skin types.
