As we age, loss of skin tone results in wrinkles around the eyes, across the forehead, and between the eyebrows. At first, these wrinkles will appear only upon contraction of the underlying facial muscles (i.e., when someone smiles, frowns, or makes other repeated facial expressions). BOTOX® Cosmetic, by loosening the muscles below the skin, will cause these “dynamic wrinkles” to smooth out.
BOTOX® Cosmetic's power to combat wrinkles stems from its key ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, a chemical that causes a reversible form of muscle paralysis. In nature, the toxin is produced by the bacteria clostridium botulinum. Botulinum has been used safely for many years to treat muscle spasms of the face, neck, and extremities.
To treat wrinkles, Dr. Berris administers an injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic to the muscles responsible for wrinkles appearing in a specific area. The number of injections depends on the number of areas being treated. BOTOX® treatments are administered on an out-patient basis at our Sacramento office, a state-of-the-art facility characterized by a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
It can take three to five days after an injection for the muscles to begin to loosen, and optimal results generally occur in two weeks. The muscles will gradually recover their strength over the next three to four months, but the actual length that BOTOX® Cosmetic will work may vary slightly from individual to individual.
Restylane® is an FDA-approved solution to wrinkles and lips that are thinner than desired. When injected, Restylane® gently smoothes away fine lines around the lips and mouth and on the forehead, leaving no scars at the injection sites. Restylane® is one of the most versatile injectables. At our Sacramento practice, Dr. Berris uses it to help patients to correct facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, and to add fullness to the lips. This natural filler is also used to contour the face, adding definition to the cheeks or chin.
Like JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel and Perlane®, Restylane® is made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that exists in the body, so it is completely biodegradable and considered extremely safe. Hyaluronic acid naturally attracts water, making it an ideal soft-tissue filler.
Injections with Restylane® are performed in the comfort of our Sacramento office. The procedure is simple, takes only around 30 minutes, and involves minimal discomfort. Before injections are administered, the patient's face will be coated with a topical anesthetic. Then Dr. Berris will carefully inject the areas requiring treatment.
Although bruising or swelling may occur in some patients, it is a temporary effect. Restylane® treatments offer instant results and are long-lasting. Treatments can be repeated as necessary, typically every six to 12 months.
JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is an FDA-approved solution to moderate or severe wrinkles. Like Restylane® and Perlane®, JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally existing substance in the body that hydrates the skin and provides volume, helping the skin retain a smooth appearance. A natural component of healthy tissue, hyaluronic acid is both biodegradable and biocompatible.
JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel can be an effective treatment for moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and forehead. A multipurpose dermal filler, JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel may also be used to add definition to the lips, cheeks, or chin and to help minimize the appearance of scars.
Dr. Berris performs JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel injections in the comfort of our elegant Sacramento office. The injections take around 15 minutes to administer and patients experience very little discomfort during the procedure. Before treatment, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the injection site. Using an extremely fine needle, Dr. Berris carefully injects JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel into the wrinkles and folds that require treatment.
Most patients report immediate improvement, often after only one treatment. The results may vary; however, many patients experience smoother skin for up to a year. Although some redness or irritation may occur, these side effects are temporary and should disappear within a week.
Radiesse® consists of extremely small spheres of calcium hydroxylapitite (CaHA) suspended in a gel-like material. CaHA is a major component of bone and teeth and has been used in human beings in solid form for the past 15 to 20 years.
Dr. Berris has used CaHA successfully in many reconstructive surgeries over the years. He’s been impressed by how well tolerated the substance is by the human body. Because this material is a natural component of the body, injections of Radiesse® do not require allergy testing, as has been required with collagen injections in the past. In addition to adding desired volume and filling wrinkles, Radiesse® actually stimulates the body to produce additional collagen.
Most fillers, including hyaluronic acid, hydroxylapitite, collagen, and even fat, eventually are absorbed by the body and require repeat injections for long-term results. ArteFill® is an FDA-approved non-resorbable filler, the first and only of its kind. Its revolutionary formula contains PMMA microspheres, collagen, and local anesthetic. The combination of collagen and these microspheres provides for immediate and long-lasting results. While the collagen will eventually dissolve, the microspheres serve as a permanent filler.
To test for any allergy to collagen, a skin test will be administered four weeks prior to treatment with ArteFill® at our Sacramento office. Depending on the depth of the wrinkles and folds, most people will get an adequate correction with two treatments. As with any of the injectable fillers, mild swelling and reddening at the treatment site is to be expected. The side effects are usually gone within 24 to 48 hours.
Sculptra™ is a synthetic, biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin. It is made up of microscopic particles of poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biodegradable material that has been widely used in absorbable sutures. Sculptra™ is fundamentally different from all other "fillers." It does not, in and of itself, fill in depressed areas. Instead, Sculptra™ is a "volumizer", (i.e., it simulates the body over time to form its own natural collagen, which in turn makes the tissue fuller.)
Like Restylane® and JUVÉDERM™Injectable Gel, Perlane® is an extremely versatile dermal filler made from non-animal-derived hyaluronic acid. A natural component of skin, hyaluronic acid keeps the skin hydrated by attracting moisture. The many applications of Perlane® include wrinkle reduction, lip enhancement, chin augmentation, and cheek augmentation. Perlane® has also proven effective for reducing the appearance of acne scars.
