The loss of elasticity in the skin over time combined with the effects of gravity can cause the forehead to sag and folds or furrows to develop. Loose skin can also affect the position of the eyebrows, and a person may begin to look tired, angry, or sad because of sagging.
Many people elect to have a procedure known as a brow lift to minimize or eliminate the effects of forehead sagging. Also known as a forehead lift, a brow lift can make the forehead smoother and elevate the eyebrows, resulting in a more youthful expression. At the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery, serving Folsom and Roseville from our Sacramento office, Craig E. Berris, M.D. performs brow lift surgery, achieving results that are natural-looking and in perfect harmony with each patient's face.
The ideal candidate for brow lift surgery is in good general health and has realistic expectations regarding the potential outcome of their surgery. Many people over 40 experience forehead sagging that may result in frown lines and can give the eyes a hooded appearance. It can also make them look older and more tired than they feel. Brow lift surgery can often provide these patients with a smoother brow area and a younger-looking appearance. In many cases, a brow lift can be combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for further facial rejuvenation.
During your consultation at our Sacramento-based practice, Dr. Berris will examine the structure of your face, the condition of your skin, and the location of your hairline to determine the best place for the incision. He will go over the advantages of each approach so that your brow lift procedure is tailored to your specific needs. Dr. Berris will also discuss the types of anesthesia, associated procedures that may enhance your results, the risks of each procedure, and the cost.
All surgery is performed at our accredited outpatient surgery center, the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery. Based in Sacramento, our practice is ideally located for Folsom and Roseville patients. Generally, brow lift surgery takes one to two hours and is usually performed while the patient is under IV "twilight" sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Berris utilizes either the coronal technique (with the incision at the top of the head), or the endoscopic technique (with the incision just behind the hairline).
After the incision has been made, the skin covering the forehead is lifted. With an artist's eye for harmony, Dr. Berris adjusts the eyebrows to a more flattering position. Muscles that cause the formation of frown lines may also be removed. Once the forehead skin has been smoothed and excess skin removed, Dr. Berris closes the incision with sutures.

After brow lift surgery, the area may be bandaged. If applied, bandages are generally removed the day following the procedure. Sutures will be removed within seven to 10 days. During the first couple of weeks following surgery, you may experience a certain amount of bruising and swelling. This is normal. In some patients bruising may extend to the cheek and eyelid area. Makeup can be applied to disguise any discoloration until the bruising subsides. Keeping your head elevated while sleeping will help minimize any swelling. You may also experience some numbness and/or itching as healing progresses. These will diminish with time.
