A Revitalized Look for Sacramento, Folsom, and Roseville Residents – Eyelid Surgery

At the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery, Craig E. Berris, M.D. performs natural-looking eyelid surgery to refresh and enhance a person's appearance. Our state-of-the-art facility serving patients in Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, and beyond is an ideal location for your eyelid surgery. Not only is Dr. Berris one of the premier facial plastic surgeons in the United States, but his highly trained staff has a reputation for making patients feel at home in our beautiful office.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is designed to rejuvenate and refresh the area around the eyes. Drooping upper eyelids or baggy lower eyelids can make people appear tired and may even interfere with their vision. During eyelid surgery, the surgeon removes pouches of fat and loose skin from the upper and lower eyelids. Well over 200,000 people in the United States underwent eyelid surgery in 2002 alone, making it one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed annually in America.

Who May Benefit

The ideal candidate for eyelid surgery has good overall health and realistic expectations. Eyelid surgery is an effective remedy for eyelids that are baggy or drooping. However, eyelid surgery cannot correct fine lines or wrinkles about the eyes, nor can it improve hooding caused by sagging eyebrows. If these problems are also troubling you, you may wish to ask your surgeon about combining eyelid surgery with a brow lift or laser skin resurfacing to enhance your final results.

When discussing any medical procedure, elective or otherwise, with a surgeon, it is important to disclose all medical information. Patients with the following medical conditions should be especially aware that these conditions may increase the degree of risk involved in the procedure:

  • Dry Eye
  • Detached Retina
  • Glaucoma
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Circulatory Disorders
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes

The Consultation

During your consultation at the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery, conveniently located for residents of Sacramento, Roseville, and Folsom, Dr. Berris can determine your candidacy for eyelid surgery. He will check visual acuity, degree of vision impairment from drooping skin, and tear production. He will also determine whether there are any eye conditions that might be affected by surgery. Prior to performing any procedure, he will fully explain the techniques involved, the types of anesthesia that will be used, and any potential risks.

During the consultation, you are encouraged to express your aesthetic desires and ask questions. Your consultation is an opportunity for an open discussion between you and Dr. Berris that will help establish the basis for a successful outcome.

The Procedure

Dr. Berris will perform your surgery at our on-site surgical suite serving the Sacramento area, including Folsom and Roseville. During upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Berris will mark individual lines and creases where incisions are to be made. In placing incisions within these natural folds in the skin, our surgeon is able to keep any potential scarring as inconspicuous as possible. Excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed, and fine sutures are used to close the incision, minimizing the visibility of any scars.

During lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Berris will remove the excess fat through a small incision behind the eyelid. If there are horizontal folds of skin, these can be tightened by either excising a small strip of skin underneath the eyelashes or with laser skin resurfacing.

After Surgery

After surgery, antibiotic ointment will be applied to the eyelids and eyes, which may blur your vision slightly. You should apply cold compresses to your eyes to minimize swelling and bruising. After two days of cold compresses, warm compresses should be applied for half an hour twice a day until any discoloration clears. To avoid the chance of further bruising, you should avoid strenuous activity for 10 days following surgery. If your eyes feel dry or scratchy, artificial tears can be used to lubricate them. Generally, eyelid surgery is not painful, although pain pills are included in the postoperative kit that you are given. Most patients, however, do not feel the need to take them.
