Laser Skin Resurfacing, Hair Removal, and More for Sacramento and Roseville Residents

In addition to an array of cosmetic surgery procedures, non-invasive enhancements such as IPL Photofacial, and dermal injectables, Craig E. Berris, M.D. and his highly trained staff provide other treatments in order to address the various needs of our valued patients. Laser skin resurfacing and hair removal are just two of the procedures we offer. Sacramento and Roseville area patients interested in the procedures listed below will have their needs attended to with our characteristic blend of expertise and personalized care.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing can enhance the appearance of skin that has been affected by sun damage, aging, wrinkles, and acne scarring. Wrinkles around the eyes can often be removed, and those around the mouth, cheeks, and forehead can be significantly improved. At the Center for Cosmetic Eyelid and Laser Surgery, Craig E. Berris, M.D. performs laser skin resurfacing for his Sacramento and Roseville area patients.

Good Candidates for Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing works best on relatively light skin. Patients who have more pigmentation in their skin may develop discolorations as a result of treatment with the laser. Moderate or more severe scars benefit most from combining revision techniques followed by resurfacing.

During the Procedure

A topical anesthetic medication will be applied and you will receive intravenous twilight sedation and a local anesthetic to make the laser skin resurfacing treatment more comfortable. Then Dr. Berris will perform multiple passes of the CO2 laser to vaporize the upper layer of skin, allowing fresh, new skin to emerge. At the end of your procedure, a thin silicone mask will be applied to your face. This will make the skin heal faster and with less redness, making for a more comfortable recovery period.

After Laser Treatment

Your skin may feel slightly sore the first few days following treatment and, like a sunburn, may itch somewhat after the third or fourth day. Medication will be provided to sooth the skin. Any redness will gradually fade, and you will be instructed by our skin care specialist about using certain cosmetics to help camouflage the redness, as well as to maximize your improvement and protect your skin.

Pulsed-Light Hair Removal

We offer a quick and easy alternative to laser hair removal at our Sacramento practice serving Roseville and surrounding communities. Like laser hair removal, pulsed-light treatments work by emitting pulses of intense light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles, disabling the cells responsible for growing new hair. The treatment will achieve permanent hair reduction in most patients. Any area of the body, except the area around the eyes, may be treated with the pulsed-light system.

The Difference between Laser and Pulsed-Light Treatments

Pulsed-light systems and lasers are very similar, removing hair in the same way. However, the Palomar IPL machine employed at our practice can remove hair up to 10 times faster than laser treatment. Treatment of the bikini line or underarms might take 20 to 30 minutes with older laser hair removal technology, versus approximately five minutes with the new Palomar EsteLux®.

Good Candidates for Pulsed-Light Hair Removal

The treatment works best in people with fair skin and medium to dark hair. Darker skin absorbs some of the light energy emitted during treatment, rather than allowing it to be directed exclusively onto the hair follicle. This absorbed heat energy could cause skin discolorations and other problems. If the skin is tanned, it should be allowed to fade prior to treatment.

Pulsed-Light Treatments for Quick and Easy Hair Removal

After your initial preparation, our nurse will move a wand-like device over the skin. For most people, the pulsed light produces what is described as a mild “snapping” sensation. Although topical anesthesia is unnecessary for most individuals, patients may request it if they prefer. The procedure can take as little as five minutes or longer, depending on the treatment area, and patients can go home immediately following treatment.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of spider veins by injection. Spider veins are tiny purple and red vessels found most often on the lower thighs, the inner knee, or the lower legs. Spider veins may develop with age, pregnancy, weight gain, or prolonged standing.

A typical treatment session lasts about 20 to 60 minutes. Patients should bring shorts to wear. During treatment, a concentrated form of saltwater, (sodium chloride solution) is injected into the vein with a small needle. The saltwater causes enough irritation of the lining of the vein to make it collapse, which causes the scar to fade or disappear.

For best results, usually more than one treatment is required. Treatments may be spaced one to two months apart.

Permanent Makeup

Permanent cosmetic makeup is applied through a process where pigment is inserted into the middle layer of the skin. This makeup is permanent, waterproof, hassle-free, and always fresh-looking. There are several procedures available, but the most frequently requested are those involving the eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip color.

Who Would Benefit?

People who opt for permanent makeup often have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Visual impairment
  • Hay fever and watery eyes
  • Little or no brow hair
  • Alopecia (absence of hair)
  • Sparse or light lashes
  • Unsteady or arthritic hands
  • Scarring from trauma
  • Allergies to conventional cosmetics
